Handbook for Rebel Special Forces Squadron/Unit Leaders
Edition 1.4 - July 4th, 2004
What is a Squadron/Unit?
Here a Squadron/Unit is a military name for a group of online gamers (pilots/Jedis/seals/soldiers...). The Squadron/Unit is the smallest and lowest unit in RSF's hierarchy.
Each Squadron/Unit has either 8 or 12 positions for members, depending on the respective regulation of the sub-division a Squadron/Unit is in. Furthermore a Squadron/Unit has 3 or an unlimited number of reservists respective to the sub division regulation.
What is a Squadron/Unit Leader?
The Squadron/Unit Leader (SL/UL) is the commander of a Squadron/Unit. He is responsible for his Squadron/Unit and has certain rights and duties.
Duties of a Squadron/Unit Leader:
- The SL/UL must motivate his Squadron/Unit members to be active a lot. To be active means to be online often, to take part at message board discussions and to participate in BSC and RSF events.
- The SL/UL must help his members with minor problems. If the SL/UL doesn't feel capable to solve the problem, he must ask his Wing Commander to help him.
- The SL/UL must have an open ear for his members.
- The SL/UL must train and rank test his members. He may test up to the rank of Cadet 1st Class. A test report is to be written and posted on the academy message board and mailed to the academy mailing list. Instructions on how to send a test report to the academy mailing list can be found here: http://www.rebelspecialforces.org/mb_msg_view.php?id=33339&Page=1&highlight=#msg33339
- The SL/UL must report the status of its Squadron/Unit to his Wing Commander or Sub-Division Command once a month. The contents of this report will be determined by the Division Director. A sample situation report can be found in the appendix.
- The SL/UL must be active a lot by himself. He must be a positive example for his squadron members.
- The SL/UL must meet with his members regularly. This could be a chat room, an instant messenger (MSN, Zone friends, UBI...) or even voice chat (Ventrilo, Roger Wilco, Team Speak...).
Rights of a Squadron Leader:
- The SL/UL may give the confirmation to rank test requests of his members. Members that want to be rank tested for a rank higher than Lt. JG must ask their Squadron Leader for permission first. The SL/UL should evaluate carefully considering the skills and the behavior of its member.
- The SL/UL may nominate members for RSF Awards. Members that a given the status "high activity" must be also nominated for the "High Online Activity Award". To nominate members post a nomination on the nominations message board.
- The SL/UL may nominate up to two Squadron/Unit Leader Assistants (SLA/ULA), depending on the respective sub-division regulation. At the DDD’s digression The SL/UL may delegate several, but not all rights and duties to his SLA/ULA. The SLA/ULA nomination needs to be confirmed by the squadron's Wing Commander and the nominated SLA/ULA himself.
- The SL/UL and his SLA/ULA may appoint one or more helpers to delegate parts of their rights and duties on them. The helpers need to agree to their nomination.
- The SL/UL may grant edit access to his SLA/ULA for the "Squad Admin". Initially a SLA/ULA does not have the right to modify his Unit's/Force's/Squadron's roster. The SL/UL needs inform the database administrator (RSF_R_ArchVile ), if he decides to grant edit access to the "Squad Admin" to his SLA/ULA. The database administrator will then activate edit access for the SLA/ULA in the database.
Responsibility of a Squadron/Unit Leader:
The SL/UL is responsible for his whole Squadron/Unit including the SLAs/ ULA’s, the helpers and its members.
Substitution regulation:
The SL/UL may ask his Wing Commander to grant a leave of absence for a given period. If the Wing Commander agrees, the SLA will act as substitute for the SL/UL. The SLA/ULA will take all the functions, rights and duties of its SL/UL. During a leave of the SL/UL, the SLA/ULA is responsible for the squadron. The SLA/ULA is to be informed about this and it is to make sure, the SLA/ULA will be available. If not, a suitable replacement need to be found.
How to get new squadron members?
What it Recruitment?
It is normal that some members lose their interest in being in a squadron/unit and decide to leave.
The SL/UL is responsible to fill up the open spots on its pilot roster. This is done by recruiting new members.
There are two ways of recruiting new pilots:
- Watch the "System News" regularly. The link to it can be found in the left hand side menu of the RSF site. New members of RSF are announced there, along with their information and a note, whether the new member is in a Squadron/Unit yet or still available for recruiting. Simply ask the member to join your Squadron/Unit by email. Don't force him to do so, just offer the possibility to him.
- Recruit new members directly from the respective gaming lobby (MS gaming zone, UBI...). Open a game room in the lobby and name it "Join RSF" or similar. Enter information to RSF to the description of the room. For example: "RSF Rogue Squadron Recruiting. We offer excellent Training, Ranks, Position, Much Fun". Don't set up a password for the room!
When someone enters, welcome him. Use polite, friendly language when talking to possible members. Be patient and respect their will. Tell the candidate about RSF and provide him with our internet site address "http://www.rebelspecialforces.org/". If the member decides to join, guide him through the joining procedure. Direct him to the join form and help him sending the joining. Tell him about Battle Stats (BSC) (http://www.battlestats.com/) and help him to sign up there. If the sign up at BSC would be too complicated for the new member, it can be done later. Don't forget to tell him your name as recruiter and ask the member to join your Squadron/Unit. After the new recruit has sent his joining form, you could help him to create an account at UBI or MSN Gaming Zone. Welcome your new recruit on the head office board, via email and on your Squadron/Unit message board, if the member already decided to join your Squadron/Unit. Stay in contact via email to not lose the new member directly after recruiting him.
PLEASE NOTE: Squadrons/Forces/Units may only recruit new members if they are officially instructed to do so by their sub-division command. The respective sub-division command will give out recruiting orders if a Squadron/Unit is low in members.

Sample Situation Report:

Zulu Sitrep - June 2004-06-22
Vandyer -Activity @ 86%
Plays most days, at the moment, whilst the football is on has not played as much. I am in need of a holiday, which I am going away in just over a week, so when I come back I should be refreshed. Have had a very busy first 6 months in RL work but now should be ok. Would be telling lies if I said I did not loose a little interest in GR in recent months, but that has now changed. You are unlikely to see me on later than 10pm GMT but you will see me on from 5pm onwards, just about every night - its just a shame not many other RSF ppl are on then. Uses vent
Batman - Activity @ 91%
Good player and has high activity. Always contactable on MSN and always reads the MB’s. He plays the game highly too. Can takes issues raised by other members a little too seriously and often sees thinks his way and only his way. Uses vent
Mass - Activity @ 38%
To be honest, I very rarely see him playing. He also does not post much. Uses vent
Dodge - Activity @ 81%
He is an active player generally, although recently he has been quiet. I think the next few months will see his activity drop due to his RL activities such as fishing and caravan. Uses vent
Limo - Activity @ 43%
Active member, although his RSF activity of 43% seems low his is fairly active. I do not see that much of limo due to the time difference. Very good job at the stats etc Uses vent
Worm - Activity @ 51%
Active for wars but I don’t see him much other times. Uses vent
Irondog - Activity @ 59%
A good player and fairly active. Turns up for wars. Uses vent
Napalm - Activity @ On leave
Napalm is a good player and for some reason has requested to move back to Zulu - there must be a reasons but not too sure. All I want to do is keep him with RSF as he is a very good guy and having spoke to him over past months I know he has not been happy. I think his activity will pick up once he is back from leave (and if his move goes ok) Uses vent
The last Zulu check in was 100% (dated 13th June)
5 out of our 8 members live on the West coast of US, this means they are 9 hours behind me, which makes if difficult for me to see them at times. Other pple might find Mass is very active for example, then please let me know.
